War What are your initial reactions to this word? Why?

A community of enquiry! Today you are going to be involved in a ‘community of enquiry’ …… You are going to be thinking HARD!!! You may end up in ‘The Pit’…..

Remember to… Enquiry Ask questions Say when you are in ‘The Pit’! Listen closely to others Give reasons Agree and disagree Explain your ideas

Choosing a question Read the following questions carefully – without talking Alone, decide which one you feel will present the best discussion. – Which one do you have strong views on? – Which one will raise more questions? – Which one will make the class think most? – What are the most important words – why? We will spend a few minutes discussing each question before we vote…

Question 1 What is a war?

Question 2 How do you know which side is ‘right’?

Question 3 Is it better to give in and be safe, or to fight and risk losing your life?

Question 4 Is it ever right to fight?

Question 5 What does it mean to ‘win’ a war?

Question 6 If you believe in something, is it right?

Voting You can vote for 3 questions

What do you think? Without talking – spend a few minutes thinking about the question. Explain your first thoughts to your neighbour – 1 minute.

Enquiry… We are now going to begin a ‘community of enquiry’. The teacher will ‘facilitate’ the discussion

Enquiry… Remember our objectives… -To work together to share ideas and solve problems -To encourage and support others -To listen closely -To support ideas fully and clearly with evidence

Final thoughts…. At the end of the enquiry… Try to sum up what you think now. Have you changed your mind? Did we answer the question? Did we meet our objectives?

How did we do..? I will aim to use________ to help me to_________. ASK -To work together to share ideas and solve problems -To encourage and support others -To listen closely -To support ideas fully and clearly with evidence
