Analyze the Task Read the title Look over the selection to predict its type – narrative, expository or functional Skim the selection for graphic design elements that indicate theme or idea Think of the relationship between the title, illustrations and the type selection

Activate Prior Knowledge Recall directly relevant facts or experiences Recall your prior knowledge of the type of selection, subject and vocabulary

Plan and Predict Before reading, plan HOW you will read it Make predictions based on the content and organization Continue to plan and predict while you read

Read Read carefully and slowly Read from beginning to end Read a narrative to understand story line Read an expository to understand main idea and details about topic Read a functional selection for purpose of document; who will use it; how is it used

Use Information Write content summary before answering questions Reread to look for graphic design elements to assist you with summary Then, answer Summary and Main Idea questions first If your content summary does not match the questions, reread!
