THE NIGHT SKY Sarah Burns 2 nd grade

STARS  A star is a big ball of hot gases  The gas gives off light, which is what we see on earth  Some stars seem brighter than others because they are either  Brighter  Hotter  Closer to Earth  Telescopes are used to look closer at the stars.

CONSTELLATIONS  A group of stars that form a star picture is called a constellation.  The sky has about 88 constellations.  This constellation is called the little dipper.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM  The sun is the star closest to the Earth.  There are nine planets, including Earth that move around it.  A planet is a large ball of rock or gas that travels around the sun.  Together, the sun and the planets makes up the solar system.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM

THINK ABOUT IT  What are some things you can see in the night sky?  What is the solar system made of?  Which planets are closest to Earth?
