Categories summit Where do we go from here?

The consensus seems to be that category should be changed if assessment shows that the management objectives do not match those of the category – do you agree? Categories Governance Effectiveness

Conversely the consensus from the workshop was that category should not be changed if management effectiveness is poor – do you agree? Categories Governance Effectiveness

The consensus seems to be that Marc will be able to stuff this hamburger into his mouth in one go – do you agree?

Define a protected area system Provide advice on where particular categories are suitable Improve links between categories and conventions Incorporate the governance matrix into the guidelines Explain the role of categories in conservation planning Research the effectiveness of different categories Explore voluntary verification or certification of categories Identify category-specific criteria for management effectiveness Look at ways to integrate company reserves into PA systems Build up capacity building for dissemination of categories Refine approaches to zoning large PAs into different categories Clarify names of protected areas Agree common mechanisms and appeal options for assignment Freshwater: focus management matrix more on freshwater Forests: clarify limits re plantations, commercial forestry and VI Marine: mainstream marine issues in new guidelines Species: develop a principle to integrate species and PAs Some proposals from workshop/discussion

Developing the guidelines The guidelines text will have to balance the conclusions from the summit with those of regional meetings and other consultation exercises

Next steps for publication of guidelines Summit proceedings –6 weeks for authors to make changes / add comments –Edited into a book with summary of E-forum and summit –Published late 2007… Revised guidelines –Draft prepared by end August 2007 –Discussed at WCPA steering group September 2007 –Take draft to preparatory meetings for WCC and conventions –6 weeks consultation and an E-forum on content –Draft revised by December 2007 –Field testing in selected countries early 2008 –Refinement mid 2008 –Development of IUCN language versions mid 2008 –Put up for approval at Barcelona WCC September 2008 –Published late 2008 – full and summary version –Dissemination strategy launched at publication

Help… Spread the word: take the papers and results of this meeting back to your constituencies Comments: be ready to comment on the draft guidelines by late 2007 Case studies: we will need some case studies for the guidelines (and website) Field testing: sites or national systems suitable for testing out the guidelines Languages: people willing to help prepare or comment on different language versions Cash: IUCN needs contributions…
