Setting & Main Idea My Side of the Mountain takes place in the Catskill Mountains just outside of New York City in the present. Sam Gribley is a 12 year old boy who leaves home with permission from his parents to learn to survive on his own in the wilderness.

3 main events from the story Sam leaves home with only 5 things - $30, knife, ball of string, flint and steel, and an ax. Sam takes a falcon from its nest and teaches it to hunt for him. Sam’s family comes to live with him in the mountains.

Characters Sam – 12 year old boy that makes his home in a tree. Bando – college English teacher that spends his summer in the Catskill Mountains. Frightful – falcon that lives with Sam and becomes his provider. Miss Turner – librarian that helps Sam to locate his great – grandfather’s farm

Why I would recommend this book I would recommend this book because it is full of adventure and excitement. Although Sam learns to live on his own in the mountains, he has to overcome many obstacles. His adventures with his many animal friends are one of a kind.
