SURFBOARDS By: Brandon Burrow Jamie Reaves

Background Info The surfboard was believed to have originated in Polynesia around A.D In later years, it was believed that the Polynesians brought the sport with them to Hawaii. The first surfboards were made from various trees on the island, and were shaped by hand. They were then stained and finished using oils from plants

Raw Materials Polyurethane Foam Core (base) Fiber Glass Cloth (first coat) Polyester Resin (second coat) Stringer (wooden line down the center of the board) Fins (made of wood or laminated layers of fiber glass and resin)

“In The Making” Shaping the foam core Adding the stringer Shaping the blank Laminating the outer shell Applying the filler coat and adding the fin Sanding the board Final finishing

Purpose Recreation Competition Travel.

Recycling Companies such as “re-surf” recycle old or broken surfboards At recycling sites, they are prepared for redistribution into new products.
