Study Guide September 27, 2012 For Friday Assessment 2.1) Describe the factors that affect the pitch and loudness of sound produced by vibrating objects.

Science Ignitor Write down the defintion of the term ‘Vibration’ List at least two real world examples of the term

What Causes Sound? Vibrations: The back and forth movement of an object that causes sound. Example: Plucking a ruler on the side of a desk. (model) Example: Strumming the string on a guitar. Example: Beating a hand on a desk.

Do All Objects Make the Same Sound? Discuss Density? (the amount of mass in 1cm cubed on an object) Solid objects? Hollow (sp.) objects? Shape? Materials? Perform the Drop Chamber Experiment!!!

Why were some sounds loud and some soft? Vibrations: the more intense the vibration, the louder the sound. The sound waves are actually higher (amplitude) when the vibrations are more intense. This makes the sound louder (volume)

Post Lab Question What causes sound?

Answer Vibrations cause sound-the back and forth movement of objects!!!

Sound Discrimination Ability to tell the difference between sounds. Pop Thud Crack whip

Properties of Sound Words that describe the sound of objects. Volume (Loudness of Sound) Pitch (How high or low a sound is)

Vibration The rapid back and forth movement of an object that causes sound Example: hitting a drum with a stick (the drum vibrates)
