1 Sound Energy Sound energy is the energy of vibrating particles
It is caused by vibrations carried through a substance Most of the time you hear a sound because it vibrates the air particles

2 Sound Energy Sound energy can be both kinetic and potential For example: When you pluck a guitar string you stretch it and change it’s shape (potential). Then you let it go and it snaps back into place (kinetic). The moving guitar string does work on the air particles which vibrate and transmit that energy The vibrating air causes your ear drum to vibrate which allows you to hear the sound

3 Sound Energy Sound is a wave that has frequency and pitch
Frequency is the rate of vibration in a given time Pitch is the sound we hear as a result of the frequency Pitch can be described as high or low (like a note when singing)

4 Change In Frequency = Change In Pitch

5 Sound Strike the drum with your finger-what happens to the paperclips?
What do you see? What do you hear? How do you know that sound is a form of energy?

6 Rubber Band Music 1. Measure the length of the rubber band without stretching it 2. Now stretch out the rubber band and measure it 3. Hold the rubber band at each end stretched out and have a partner pluck it. Describe the sound. 4. Repeat step 3 when grasping the rubber band with your hand at one end and now another holding it in the middle. Be accurate and hold the rubber band at the exact halfway point. Be sure to use your measurements. Pluck the rubber band and describe the sound. 5. Repeat the previous steps but now hold it at one end and at ¼ the total length. Pluck the rubber band and describe the sound. 6. Record all results in the table on your note sheet and answer the questions.
