Fate Addesso The volume of a cylinder is given by the equation V = r 2 h, where r is the radius and h is the height. Find the volume of a cylinder with: 1)A radius of 4 cm and a height of 6 cm. 2)A height of 12 inches and a radius of 15 inches.

Solving Equations and Formulas  Some equations contain more than one variable.  It is sometimes helpful to solve these equations for one of the variables.  Even though these equations have more variables, we still use the same rules as we do for solving equations with one variable: Reverse the order of operations and whatever you do to one side, you must also do to the other side of the equation.

Example If you wanted to find the height of a cylinder, it would be helpful to solve our equation for h: V = r 2 h

Use our new equation to find the height of: 1)A cylinder with volume 32 and radius 4. 2)A cylinder with volume 16 and radius 2.

Try… The formula for the area of a rectangle is A = bh. Solve the equation for b and then find the base of a rectangle with area 54 and height 9.

More Practice 1)The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2L + 2W Solve the equation for W and then find the width of a rectangle with perimeter 20 and length 6.

2)Solve 7f + g = 5 for f. 3)Solve ax – c = b for x.

4) Solve rt – 2n = y for t. 5) Solve kn + 4f = 9v for n.

6) Solve bc + 3g = 2k for c. 7) Solve 8c + 6j = 5p for j.

8) Solve = q for p. 9)Solve = a for b.
