Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship Claire Fowler Welsh Assembly Government

ESDGC What is ESDGC? Where is it found at present within education? Levers for change What does it look like? Developing partnerships

What is a sustainable and globally aware citizen? Someone who is aware of the wide world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen They are outraged by social injustice Someone who respects and values diversity They actively participate in and contribute to the community at a range of levels from local to global They take responsibility for their actions. They have experience of the natural world including practical projects and real world issues.

What is ESDGC ? the links between society, economy and environment and between our own lives and those of people throughout the world; the needs and rights of both present and future generations; the relationships between power, resources and human rights; the local and global implications of everything we do and the actions that individuals and organisations can take in response to local and global issues’

What it is not a separate subject; a series of discrete concepts or topics; confined to the classroom; the responsibility of just one teacher in the school; about transmitting a set of answers to pupils.
