What is an open ended question? An open ended question is a question that asks for YOU to come up with the answer and does not give you possible answers to select from (Multiple Choice). An open ended question is a question that asks for YOU to come up with the answer and does not give you possible answers to select from (Multiple Choice).

Ok…So, what is this Brain and Book thing again? Again, Brain and Book is an easy way for you to remember how to answer an open ended question. Again, Brain and Book is an easy way for you to remember how to answer an open ended question. Brain = Idea Brain = Idea Book = Text evidence to support the Idea Book = Text evidence to support the Idea

Let’s Break This Down Even Further Brain = Idea = This is the answer to the question you have been asked Brain = Idea = This is the answer to the question you have been asked Book = Text = A quote from the piece of literature that supports the answer you have given Book = Text = A quote from the piece of literature that supports the answer you have given THEY MUST CONNECT WITH ONE ANOTHER!! THINK OF THEM AS BROTHERS!! THEY ARE RELATED AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL THAT THEY ARE RELATED!!

Some Things to Remember… It is best to use part of the question in your answer. It is best to use part of the question in your answer. For Example: Question: What is the setting in “Priscilla and the Wimps”? Answer: The setting in “Priscilla and the Wimps” is…

Some More Things to Remember… Give the Brain = Idea = Answer to the question (with part of the question in it) & Give the Book = Text Evidence = A quote from the piece that is RELATED to your answer & Then, YOU ARE DONE!! Yay!!

Any Questions? ????

Let’s Practice!! Please answer the following questions using Brain and Book. You are going to need your story, “Priscilla and the Wimps”. 1. When the author uses the words “Never mind his name. Gang member’s don’t need names. They’ve got group identity.” What was the intended impact on the reader? 2. What is the best summary of the section of “Priscilla and the Wimps” that begins “Except there was this one girl named Priscilla Roseberry.” and ends with, “If there was anybody who didn’t notice Klutter’s Kobra’s, it was Priscilla.”? Highlight these quotes in your story, so they will stand out to you.
