Genetics Vocabulary Genotype—the combinations of alleles Phenotype—the expression of a trait Genetics-The scientific study of heredity Alleles-the different forms of a gene Trait—a distinguishing quality that can be passed from one generation to another

Recessive-an allele whose trait is masked in the presence of a dominant allele Dominant—an allele whose trait always shows up in the organism. Genes-segments of DNA that carry hereditary instructions and are passed from parent to offspring.

Hybrid-an organism with two different alleles for a trait Purebred-an organism with two of the same alleles for a trait Homozygous—purebred Heterozygous—hybrid

Heredity—the passing of traits from parents to offspring Offspring—the result of reproduction Parent—the original organism or where the genes have come from

Sex Cells-egg and sperm produced as a result of meiosis Sex Chromosomes—carry the genes that determine whether the offspring will be male or female
