OPTICAL DEVICES AND TECHNOLOGY Hi! How are you?

Technology: Cell Phone  What is it? A device that allows you to make a receive telephone calls.

Relation to Optics*  *This is an important topic!

What is Optics?  Study of properties of light, including visible, ultraviolet and infrared light

Relation to Optics*  Use electromagnetic waves to transmit information (microwaves)  Liquid crystal display (LCD)  Light polarized  Liquid crystals transmit polarized light  -critical can be changed by electric current *This is an important topic

Impact on Society! **  How does the technology affect...  Our everyday lives?  Jobs?  Education?  ** This section is even more importanter

Positive Impact on Society  Enables wireless communication across long distances (calling, text messaging)  Eliminates paper waste (i.e. letters)

Negative Impact on Society  Eliminates face to face communication, less personal interaction  Radiation damage caused by radiation (cancer, headaches); proximity to head makes it more dangerous

Your Task  1. Pick a technology  2. What is it’s relation to optics  3. Positive impact on society (2)  4. Negative impact on society (2)  5. Have fun and enjoy life (or something like that)
