Chapter 9 The Spine

The Spine 4 Segments Neutral Spine Sacrum Lumbar Spine Thoracic Spine Cervical Spine Neutral Spine Spine should have normal curvature and alignment.

Bones Bones are called vertebrae. Parts Functions 7 Cervical 12 Thoracic 5 Lumbar 5 Sacral Parts Spinous Process Spinal Canal Nerve Root space Functions Protection Hold body upright Muscle attachment

Disks Intervertebral disk lie between the vertebrae. Two Parts Allows for movement and flexibility. Space for nerves. Provides cushion between bones. Two Parts Jelly like core (nucleus pulposus) Cartilage Layer (annulus fibrosus) Do not heal like other tissues.

Muscles, tendons, and Ligaments Muscles and Tendons Act like anchors on a mast of a ship. Allow us to make the movement necessary for sports. Ligaments Prevent bones from separating. Allow for flexion and movement without allowing the bones to separate completely.
