 An operating system is a software that controls the general operations of a computer.

 Examples of Operationg system (OS) 1. Microsoft Windows

2. Mac OS

 Utility programs – A type of system software that help to manage and maintain your computer.  Examples: disk optmising, disk error checking and antivirus software.

 Types of application software

 Examples:

 Word Processor – Used to edit and create documents.  Spreadsheet – An electronic worksheet that has a grid made up of rows and columns.  Graphics – Used to create and edit graphics. Two main categories: Raster graphics editing applications, such as Adobe Photoshop. Vector graphics editing applications such as Adobe Illustrator.

 Database – enables you to store data in organised manner and find specific items easily.  Web browser – is a program that is used for obtaining and presenting information through the World Wide Web.
