Introducing the IB Design Cycle 6th Grade Social Studies

What is the IB Design Cycle? The IB design cycle is a tool used by International Baccalaureate students to help them create and reflect on answers to problems. There are four major stages of the design cycle: Investigate Plan Create Evaluate

The IB Design Cycle Step1 Investigate Step 2 Plan Step 3 Create Step 4 Evaluate

The IB Design Cycle

Step 1: Investigate Investigate: Identify or look out for the problem to be solved. Explore resources, i.e. the internet, documents, books, magazines. Questions to ask: Do I understand this project? Do I have the materials I need to create it at home or do I need to go to the library ? Do I need to purchase any materials? Do I have enough time to complete it? Example: Goal is to make a scrapbook that will describe a trip to the western frontiers. Research online sources, go through the history textbook, encyclopedias to find good explanations. What information do you need for your scrapbook ?

Step 2 Plan Plan: Come up with a timeline to complete your project. Questions to ask: Do I understand this project? Do I have the materials I need to create it at home or do I need to go to the library ? Do I need to purchase any materials ? Do I have enough time to complete it? Example: Goal is to make a scrapbook that will describe a trip to the western frontiers. Read and make your notes or story to go with your scrapbook. Research the geography of the western United States Research and select pictures or other materials for your scrapbook. Experiment with different designs that suits the project you are working on. Choose a design Go through the project rubric to see if you are following the specifications.

Step 3: Create Create: This is when you come up with your final product by using the plan in step 2. Questions to ask: Questions to ask: Do I understand this project? Do I have the materials I need to create it at home or do I need to go to the library ? Do I need to purchase any materials? Do I have enough time to complete it? Step 4: Evaluate Evaluate: This is when you go over and reflect on your scrapbook. Questions to ask: Did my scrapbook meet the requirements of the project? Do I need to make any final changes? Example: Goal is to make a scrapbook that will describe a trip to the western frontiers. Use your plan to come up with your presentation. Evaluate your scrapbook. How did it look?
