Valerie Thannisch Cori Harris Leah TenEyck 4 th Grade Math & Science Overview

Attendance & TEKS change This year attendance is extremely important: just ask your child how much learning we endure with and through each other every day! The curriculum is extremely fast paced because this year we are bridging the gaps of TEKS that were not taught last year and are now taken out of 4 th grade curriculum Every moment matters! I tell my students that every instructional moment matters and there is no down time during class instructional time

New TEKS – New Curriculum Our district has adopted Origo Stepping Stones as our curriculum resource for the year Math Book is also the student journal Workshop Model: minute opening 30 minutes small group min closing 30 minute problem solving block

New Math TEKS for These TEKS are in addition to last years 4 th grade TEKS, although some have moved to 3 rd for this year.

Add and subtract whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place using the standard algorithm Multiply and divide four-digits by one- digit Round in all four operations (+, -, x, ÷) Number Sense

Understand improper fractions Compare fractions with like and unlike denominators Create equivalent fractions Add and subtract fractions with like denominators Use benchmark fractions to determine reasonableness Decompose fractions, such as 5/2= ½ + ½ + ½ + ½ + ½ Fractions

Use formulas to find area and perimeter Use stem and leaf plots Convert between metric units Find elapsed time without tools Measurement

Identify points, lines, line segments, rays and angles Identify triangles based on their angles Measure degrees Use a protractor Draw an angle with a given measure Determine the measure of an unknown angle Geometry

Fixed/variable expenses Calculate profit Compare advantages and disadvantages of savings options Allocate weekly allowance for spending and savings Personal Financial Literacy

Math – How can you help? The jump from 3 rd grade to 4 th grade is large and students will need reinforcement at home: **Khan Academy and Learnzillion is a great resource for reviewing a concept. Make sure students know their Multiplication facts! **It relates to all areas of mathematics. **Multiplication Slide and other apps for fluency

Homework Policy Homework goes home every Monday for the week. Students complete it at their convenience Homework  ins are Wednesday and Friday If they forget it have them bring it to us at the following Wednesday or Friday  in Homework is for reinforcement and for us to continue to check for misconceptions

Science – New Curriculum Our district has adopted science fusion for our curriculum resource this year Students will have a log in once the district assigns them Access digital lessons to reinforce the concepts being taught in class May also be used as content of the class or as homework for a ‘flipped’ classroom Students will find many other resources on the website

Thank you all for coming! You are helping make it the best academic year yet. We appreciate all that you do at home to support your child’s education! “Teachers, who love children, teach children to love learning!”
