Curragh Post Primary Horsemanship Courses These courses are aimed at Post Leaving Certificate students who wish to gain specific skills relevant to the Equestrian Industry and in so doing, gain a recognised qualification. Applications are welcomed from mature students who wish to gain a recognised qualification in the Equestrian industry. Equestrian Experience is desirable.

Curragh Post Primary Horsemanship Courses PLC COURSES Year 1. HORSEMANSHIP FETAC LEVEL 5 Leads to Certificate in Horsemanship. Year 2. EQUINE BREEDING FETAC LEVEL 6 Leads to Advanced Certificate in Equine Breeding. or HORSEMANSHIP FETAC LEVEL 6 Leads to Advanced Certificate in Horsemanship. commencing in September 2014

STRUCTURE OF COURSE Horsemanship LEVEL 5 Students will be in College two days per week; Students will be on practical instruction one day per week; Students will be on relevant work experience two days a week; The College places students in relevant Centres for Work Experience.

What will you study on the level 5 course? This will be achieved by completing: Stable and Yard Routine Work Experience Communications Sport Horse Riding Equine Anatomy and Physiology Equine Nutrition Horse Breeding Bookkeeping Manual and Computerised Payroll Manual and computerised

Horsemanship Level 5 Modules Stable and yard routine Students cover a large range of skills used in the care of the horse. Skills are taught practically and backed up with a sound theoretical knowledge.

Horsemanship Level 5 Modules Sport horse riding This module aims to develop the skills necessary to ride a horse competently at walk, trot and canter and to ride a horse over a course of fences

Horsemanship Level 5 Modules Equine anatomy and physiology This module facilitates the student to acquire knowledge of the structure and function of the horse's body The student should develop an understanding of how the equine body works as an entity and be able to recognise the signs of health and ill- health in a horse

Horsemanship Level 5 Modules Equine nutrition The aim of this module is to facilitate the student to acquire an understanding of the structure and function of the equine digestive system The student will acquire knowledge of the composition of food and feedstuffs, good feeding principles and understand the nutritional requirements specific to work load, breed and status The student is taught how to recognise common diet related disorders and be aware of possible preventative measures

Horsemanship Level 5 Modules Breeding The aim of this module is to enable the learner to develop skills and procedures of good practice that will allow them to work safely with a variety of breeding stock in different situations. To facilitate the learner to become competent in assisting with a range of procedures and skills used in horse breeding. The student will be taught the theoretical concepts of horse breeding and apply them in practical situations.

STRUCTURE OF COURSE Horsemanship/Breeding LEVEL 6 Students will be in College two days per week; Students will be generally on practical instruction one day per week. Students will be on relevant work experience two days a week; The College places students in relevant Centres for Work Experience.

In addition to the modules: Work Experience. Students are placed out on a period of continuous work experience. This forms part of the work experience module. It allows students to get a valuable understanding of the week to week routines in the industry. Visits and Speakers. During the term where possible relevant trips and visits are organised. Guest speakers who are specialists in their field are invited to present to the students.

PROGRESSION to EMPLOYMENT from our courses. Successful completion of your course leads to an internationally recognised level of qualification. You will also have gained valuable work experience within your chosen industry. Our graduates can progress directly to employment both at home and overseas. Graduates from our course have gone on to take up employment in the horse industry in the following roles; Administrators within the racing and breeding industry Managers of yards and studs Riding instructors within the leisure sector Working with equine vets Work riders and head lads in racing industry.

PROGRESSION to HIGHER EDUCATION from our courses Athlone IT Higher Certificate in Business in Equine Studies Level 6 Any Fetac level 5 is acceptable. There are no specific module requirements. Entry is competitive. As a holder of this level 6 award you are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor of Business in Equine Studies (Level 7) one year add-on programme at AIT. Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing (Level 7) Ordinary Degree Any FETAC level 5 is acceptable, however applicants must have Leaving Certificate Mathematics or the module Mathematics (C20139) and a Leaving Certificate Science subject (min OB3) or the module Biology (C20006)(Merit required). Entry is competitive. NUI Maynooth MH405 Equine Business (Level 8 Hons Degree) Applicants must obtain distinctions in 5 modules Also required Leaving Certificate Mathematics with a minimum of Grade 0C3/HD3 or Distinction in C20139 Mathematics C20174 Mathematics for Engineering C20175 Mathematics for Computing Entry is competitive. Entry requirements are subject to change by the delivering institution and should be verified.
