E DUCATIONAL C HOICES Military: Military: - Army - Navy - Air Force *Air National Guard - Marines - Coast Guard - National Guard Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships: - Hands on approach to learning - Learn chosen trade through combination of classroom instruction and on-the job training. Career and Trade Schools: Career and Trade Schools:  Offer short term training programs in a variety of career fields (auto-body technology, cosmetology, dental assisting) to gain technical skills needed for a job.  Variety in length of the programs (few weeks to two years)  Can be expensive depending on type and length.  Credits generally cannot be transferred to another college. Specialty Colleges: Specialty Colleges:  Very limited number of programs (art, nursing, business colleges)  Cost and length of programs vary.

E DUCATIONAL C HOICES C ONTINUED 2 YEAR COLLEGES 2 YEAR COLLEGES  Most are either community colleges or technical colleges  Affordable  Certificate/diplomas-short-term programs  Transfer to a 4 year college for a bachelors degree  Classes are small  Usually hire instructors who have worked in a related career field  Generally accept anyone with a high school diploma  Some programs have addition requirements 4 YEAR COLLEGES 4 YEAR COLLEGES  Private and public  Private-smaller classes, offer more personal atmosphere  Public-large, offer more majors, programs, activities and usually less expensive.  Colleges want students who are ready for college level work  College entrance requirements vary greatly  Some will accept everyone while other accept those with excellent grades and high test scores.  Find a college that is going to be a good academic fit for you.

What are they? Most offer courses in the following: Provide training for a specific skill in addition to theory Offer programs that are two years or less Advantage- Job outlook for skilled workers is positive (fewer are trained in these fields, therefore, there’s a demand Electronics Information Technology Drafting design Healthcare Private Investigation Culinary Arts Welding Auto mechanics Arts Fashion Design Travel Video Gaming Cosmetology TECHNICAL SCHOOLS

GROUP WORK In your groups, look at the pros and cons of the post secondary option you have chosen. Make sure to look at cost, class size, prestige, on-campus housing, year commitment, differences in in- state vs. out-of-state tuition, benefits over other type of post secondary education/jobs, specific majors and any other concerns students identify.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU? Decision Making Process Choosing a career path, making a career decision, or deciding on a college major - all are critical decisions. They demand high-quality decision making. Scientific studies show that there are four essential steps you will want to follow. They are abbreviated ACIP, like “a sip” of tea!  A stands for Alternatives. When making an important decision, look at all your choices. Ask yourself, "Are there any other ways I can solve this problem? Ways that I haven't thought of?"Alternatives  C stands for Consequences. Once you have narrowed down your choices to those that look best, weigh the pros and cons of each.Consequences  I stands for Information. Search for new information about each option you are considering.Information  P means Plans. Make detailed plans for (a) how you will carry out your decision, and (b) what you will do if one of the negative consequences that you thought of under "C" occurs.Plans

JOB SHADOWING/COMMUNITY SERVICE HOW CAN THESE HELP TO REACH MY CAREER GOALS? How can I learn more about the job duties of my chosen career? How can I compare different jobs if I do not have one final career choice? What is job shadowing? Can volunteer work be included in my resume?
