slide 3 the people at the heart of this work

slide 4 prevailing statistics 1 in 7 men and 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in his or her lifetime.

slide 5 In addition to injuries, exposure to DV increases the risk of:  Chronic illnesses  Cancer  Hypertension  Depression  Substance abuse  Poor reproductive & maternal health  HIV impact on health

slide 7 the opportunity With the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act: Health plans must now cover screening and counseling for domestic violence as a women’s preventive health benefit. Insurance companies can not deny coverage to victims of DV New benchmarks on DV screening & safety planning Additional opportunities for prevention, intervention, and collaboration

slide 8 the challenge Source: Kaiser Family Foundation, State Health Facts ( ) promote effective statewide implementation of domestic violence screening and create access to integrated health and domestic violence services

slide 9 what we aim to achieve This body of work is intended to catalyze the transformation of the health care setting as a more effective entry point to access DV services and prevention. The focus is on those who are not accessing DV services and are low-income or at risk of experiencing domestic violence. If successful, this approach is one step toward a community integrated service system, with health care as one component and DV prevention as a key outcome.
