5.4 Special Quadrilaterals

Rectangles What is a rectangle by definition? A Quadrilateral with four right angles. Why is every rectangle a parallelogram? Because both pairs of opp. angles are

RHOMBUS What is a rhombus? A Quadrilateral with four congruent sides. Why is a rhombus a parallelogram? Because both pairs of opp. sides are

SQUARE What is a square? A Quadrilateral with four right angles and four congruent sides. Why are all squares parallelograms? Because both pairs of opp. sides AND/OR angles are

Diagonals! All diagonals of a rectangle are congruent. The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular. Each diagonal of a rhombus bisects two angles of the rhombus.

What if? What if an angle of a parallelogram is a right angle? DRAW IT! What if two consecutive sides of a parallelogram are congruent? DRAW IT!

Quad. ABCD is a rhombus.

Quad. FGHI is a rectangle. 12 90 – 29 12 12
