Agenda 09-22-2015 Introduction Homework Activity 3, Part 2 Complete and Review: A Plan to Separate the Mixture Substances: Graphic Organizer

Objective Students will be able to: Design a procedure to separate substances present in a mixture.

Purpose Students will be able to: Apply the new knowledge to separate mixtures safely. 3

Homework Analysis Questions 1, 3 and 5. p. A12. Activity #3

Activity 3: A Procedure to Separate the Mixture (Part 2) Observe the unidentified mixture. Record your observations in your journal (Data). Solution A Black square Red tube Long cylinder Solution B Short cylinder

Follow Procedure pp.A11-A12. 3. Discuss with your group: Ways to separate the mixture Safety precautions Tools and materials 4. Create a procedure to separate the mixture: 5. Record the procedure (Data). 6. Discuss how to remove any liquid left from the solids. 7. Record any additional steps.

Activity 3: A Procedure to Separate the Mixture (Part 2) Review and complete: Procedure to Separate Mixtures

Activity 3: A Procedure to Separate the Mixture (an example) A. Separating Solids and Liquids Put on goggles. Carefully, open the container with the unidentified mixture. Use plastic forceps to remove all the solids and place them into a large cup (SEPUP tray). B. Separating Different Liquids 1. Use a dropper to move one of the liquids into a small cup. Move as much as possible without mixing the liquids. 2. Follow the same procedure with the second liquid and place it into a second cup. 3. Clean and dry the droppers.

Activity 3: A Procedure to Separate the Mixture (an example) C. Separating and Cleaning Different Solids 1. Use forceps to separate plastic and metallic solids. Place them into different cups. 2. Rinse solids with water (rinsing water). 3. Pat dry with a paper towel. D. Clean Up 1. Clean up according to teacher’s directions. 2. Put all waste in designated containers. 3. Clean hands.
