1999: Nato wages air campaign against Yugoslavia over killing and deportation of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. NATO troops

2000: Despite receiving fewer popular votes, George Bush narrowly defeats Al Gore in a hotly contested election.

2001: Passenger jets hijacked by terrorists destroy the WTC in New York and damage the Pentagon. More than 3000 people are killed.

2001:U.S. attacks Afghanistan in an attempt to capture Osama bin Laden, oust the Taliban, and fight terrorism.

2002: President Bush creates Department of Homeland Security.

2003: U.S. and allies invade Iraq to find weapons of mass destruction, oust Saddam Hussein, and fight terrorism.

2005: Hurricane Katrina wreaks catastrophic damage on New Orleans.

2008: Barack Obama is elected as the first African American President of the U.S.
