Interlake Boat Measurement A Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Interlakes Section 4 – Sails

General Rules All sails at the Nationals must be measured or (if previously measured), stamped with a new year number. Each competitor can measure 2 sails of each type. Make the competitor fill out the measurement form for the year and sailmaker of each sail 20 Second Rule. If you can’t find a previous year’s stamp in 20 seconds, re-measure it. Be sure to check for the proper sail number Be sure to check for the royalty stamp. Let the sail owner, or their minion/crew re-fold or re-roll the sail OUTSIDE THE MEASUREMENT AREA! If feet and inches are inadvertently entered, it’s not a disaster. The Chief Measurer is usually smart enough to figure out which is which.

Measurement Form Check off area Measurement Committee Signoff Competitor Signoff If no sails were purchased, “Sail” should be “NONE”

Spinnaker Measurements Three Measurements and Two Checks Luff and Foot Center Point Measurement 6’ Girth 12’ Girth Proper Sail Number Royalty Tag

Spinnaker This is how the spinnaker looks laid out for the first two measurements (luff length & foot center point

Spinnaker – Luff With the sail folded in half, have Person #1 position the head inside the V at the head. Person #2 Places the two clews together along the clew measurement line. The clews must lie between the min and max points

Spinnaker – Foot Center Point With the clews lying on the clew measurement line within the minimum and maximum lines, the forward bottom corner of the center seam must lie within the box.

Spinnaker – 6 ft Girth With the head point still on the mark, find the point on the luffs that is 6’ from the head point. The head point may have to be shifted slightly. The center seam must then lie between the min and max points.

Spinnaker – 12 ft Girth Similarly, with the head point still on the mark, find the point on the luffs that is 12’ from the head point. The head point may have to be shifted slightly. The center seam must then lie between the min and max points.

Spinnaker – Final Steps Check that the proper sail number is on the sail. Check that there is a sail royalty tag. Spares can be purchased from the Class Secretary, Tom Humphrey. Stamp a new sail with the ISCA Insignia and the year stamp. Stamp a previously-measured sail with the year stamp only.

Jib Measurements Five Measurements and One Check Luff, Leach, and Foot lengths Foot Roach Mid-girth Royalty Tag

Jib – Luff Person #1 positions the head inside the V at the head. Person #2 Places the tack along the measurement line. The luff must be within the measurement line.

Jib – Leech Person #1 positions the head inside the V at the head. Person #2 Places the clew along the measurement line. The leech must be within the measurement line.

Jib – Foot & Foot Roach Person #1 positions the tack on the measurement mark. Fold the sail once at or above the window to gather cloth. Person #2 places the clew on the measurement line. The foot must be within the measurement line and the bottom seam cannot touch the foot roach line.

Jib – Foot & Foot Roach Fold the sail once at or above the window to gather cloth. The foot cannot touch the foot roach line

Jib – Mid-Girth 1 Fold the sail. Person #1 matches the head point to the clew to find the center of the leech. While Person #2 holds the midpoint of the leech, Person #1 matches the head point to the tack to find the center of the luff.

Jib – Mid-Girth 2 With Person #2 and #3 hold the sail, lay it on the measurement line. The mid-girth must lie inside the measurement marks

Jib – Final Steps Check that there is a sail royalty tag. Spares can be purchased from the Class Secretary, Tom Humphrey. Stamp a new sail with the ISCA Insignia and the year stamp. Stamp a previously-measured sail with the year stamp only.

Mainsail Measurements Four Measurements and Two Checks Luff, Leach, and Foot lengths Mid-girth Proper Sail Number Royalty Tag

Mainsail – Luff Person #1 positions the front side of the headboard at the head measurement mark Person #2 Places the tack along the measurement line. The luff must be within the measurement line.

Mainsail – Leech Person #1 positions the rear side of the headboard at the head measurement mark Person #2 Places the clew along the measurement line. The leech must be within the measurement line.

Mainsail – Foot Person #1 positions the tack or clew at the measurement mark (clew shown) Person #2 Places the clew or tack along the measurement line (tack shown). The foot must be within the measurement line.

Mainsail – Mid-Girth 1 Fold the sail. Person #1 matches the rear headboard point to the clew to find the midpoint of the leech. While Person #2 holds the midpoint of the leech, Person #1 matches the front headboard point to the tack to find the midpoint of the luff.

Mainsail – Mid-Girth 2 With Person #2 and #3 hold the sail, lay it on the measurement line. The mid-girth must lie inside the measurement marks

Mainsail – Final Steps Check that the proper sail number is on the sail. Check that there is a sail royalty tag. Spares can be purchased from the Class Secretary, Tom Humphrey. Stamp a new sail with the ISCA Insignia and the year stamp. Stamp a previously-measured sail with the year stamp only.
