Contents 1.Capacity building and networking 2.The example of Cap-Net 3.Preparedness for the SDGs

Dimensions of Water Governance

Capacity – more than the individuals’ knowledge...

The ability to take action...

Development Impact vs Time/resources

People are best empowered when the means of development are sustainable – home-grown, long- term, and generated and managed collectively by those who stand to benefit. For UNDP capacity development contains:  any effort to teach someone to do or do it better.  creating new institutions or strengthening old ones.  education and training,  improving individual rights, access or freedoms.

Networking ?  Interacting with other people to exchange information and develop contacts, especially to further one's career  South-South, South-North collaboration  Social media, forums, professional societies, Rotary, LinkedIn...

Cap-Net – a network of networks 23 partner networks with >1000 members covering 120 countries + >40 international partners

Joint development of training packages  IWRM for River Basin Organisations  Conflict resolution and negotiation skills  Economics in sustainable water management  IWRM as a tool for adaptation to climate change  Streams of law  Groundwater management  Integrated urban flood management  Water integrity and accountability  Hydro-climatic disasters  Why gender matters  IWRM plans  Water safety plans  Sustainable sanitation and water management  Trans-boundary groundwater management  Self learning tutorials

The SDGs: Transforming our world: the 2030 agenda for sustainable development 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 associated targets A dedicated water goal (SDG 6) with 6+2 targets Mention of water issues in other targets:1.5, 2.4, 3.3, 3.9, 11.1, 12.4, 15.1, 15.3, 15.8 Indirect links to SDG 6 in at least 8 other SDGs

Goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all  6.1 By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all  6.2 By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations  6.3 By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally  6.4 By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity  6.5 By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate  6.6 By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes  6.a By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies  6.b Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management

 Developing coordinated and targeted capacity building efforts, which build upon and complements ongoing capacity building efforts, as well as existing tools and methodologies….  Support in-country capacities to monitoring and reporting on SDG 6 progress  Identify barriers and needs and build capacities for SDG 6 implementation  Identify ways in which capacity development measurement can be more closely linked to management performance and the state of the resource Capacity development for the SDGs
