La Maison Carrée Nisel Desai Monday February 13,

This historic site is located in Nimes, Provence, France. Its French name, La Maison Carrée comes from the word carré long = “a long square” (obviously in reference to the structure’s shape.) It is known as one of the most well preserved temples from the Classical Era. This is probably due to the conversion of this Roman Temple to a Church in the 4 th century.

La Maison Carree was built around B.C.E. by Marcus Vispanius Agrippa, also the first patron of Rome’s Pantheon. An inscription along the front façade dedicates the temples to Gaius and Lucius, the heirs of Augustus, both of whom died in their youth. Its other functions included serving as a meeting site for Nime’s City Council, a canon’s house, and as a stable during the French Revolution, as well as a storehouse for the city archives. In 1823 it became a museum

La Maison Carree is an example of the classic Augustan temple. It was raised on a 2.85 high podium, in the center of the city’s forum, forming a rectangle 26.42m wide and 13.54m long. The front is characterized by a deep portico (porch supported by columns leading to the entrance of a building). It is approximately 1/3 of the temple’s length. It has 6 column’s in the front supporting the portico with ten columns topped with Corinthisn capitals under the pediment and 20 attached half columns around the perimeter. The beam, a.k.a. architrave is carved with rossettes and acanthus leaves. A large door leads to the interior, where the shrine (cella) was located.

La Maison Carree has undergone several periods of restoration during 1824 and During these times, the building was re-roofed and the lines of the original forum were revealed by clearing the square around the temple. During the latter of the restoration periods, Sir Norman Foster was commissioned to build an art gallery that has many of the distinguishing architectural facets the the Maison Carrée does.

The Eglisé de la Madeleine, (Church of Madeline) in Paris was fashioned after the Maison Carrée.
