Add & Subtract Whole Numbers Helpful Reminders When adding and subtracting, always remember to write the numbers in straight columns. Pay attention to which operation you are being asked to solve. Always start working with the ones place.

Chapter 2 Vocabulary * addends = * difference = * sum = two or more numbers added together the answer to a subtraction problem the answer to an addition problem

Solve Write the equation and the answer. 8 reduced by 48-4=4 7 more than 66+7=13 take 12 from =3

Examples: 5, ,847 5, ,847 8,010 2,316 Teacher solves on board.

Chapter 2- Your Turn! 16, ,768 16, ,768 Congratulations! Way to go! 29,163 3,627

Multiply Whole Numbers Helpful Reminders Begin by multiplying the ones place. Regroup if necessary. Add Multiply the tens place. Add any regrouped tens. Regroup if necessary. Add Multiply the hundreds. Add any regrouped hundreds. When multiplying by a number that has more than one digit, remember to put down a zero placeholder and continue with the steps above. When finished multiplying, add to find the answer.

Chapter 3 Vocabulary * factor = * product = the answer to a multiplication problem one of two or more numbers that are multiplied to give a product

Examples: 973 x 42 1,369 x 65 Teacher solves on board. 40,866 88,985

Chapter 3- Your Turn! 843 x 7 2,398 x 14 Congratulations! Way to go! 5,901 33,572

Divide By One-Digit Helpful Reminders Use basic facts and rounding to decide where to place the first digit of the quotient. Divide then bring down. Write the remainder (if necessary). Pay special attention to what you are doing when there are zeros in the problem. Be careful when saying “divided by” or “divided into”.

Chapter 4 Vocabulary * dividend= * divisor= * quotient= *remainder= R 2 2 the number that is being divided the number that is being divided into another number the answer to a division problem The # that is left over after the division is done

Examples: 8 5, R 7 867,142 96,349 R 1 Teacher solves on board.

Chapter 4- Your Turn! Congratulations! Way to go! 9 18,207 16,715 ÷ 5= 5 16,715 2,023 3,343

Congratulations!
