Periodization Neoclassicism was born in Rome in the mid-18th century, but its popularity spread all over Europe.

Characteristics Classical subject matter Depicted subjects from Classical literature and history People in static calm poses, Draped in flowing Greek robes, Roman togas and sandals

Characteristics Clear and sharp outlines within a rectilinear composition People look polished Posing in a statuesque manner, as if they’re marble sculptures

Characteristics Serious, unemotional, and sternly heroic. Gloomy colors with occasional bright highlights Used to convey moral narratives
