Here a youthful Napoleon is presented like a Roman emperor. Wearing imperial robes, he holds scepters of authority. Ingres was only 26 when he completed this work. He turned to the past for inspiration and information…studying Roman art, Byzantine ivories depicting emperors and medieval manuscripts.
