 Gymnastics were developed in ancient Greece  800 BC : Roman Empire, Greece and Persia used gymnastics for military training  18 th century : Germany popularized gymnastics for physical fitness – Friedrich ludwig Jahn created exercises on apparatus.

 1873 : Creation of the USGF  In 1881, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed  1912 : Creation of the UFGF  1942 : Creation of the FFG  1949 : The first code of points  : Russian domination

 Gymnastics is guided by the code of points.  For each apparatus only one attempt per gymnast  Each gymnast determines his routines  The objective is to finish the routines with a maximum of points  No spotter is allowed  There is a lot of particular rules by apparatus

 Measure : 12M X 12M  The allowed time is up to 90 seconds  The area is elastic  The floor requires : Power Acrobatic technic Elegance

 Height : 1,15M from floor / 1,05M from top of mat  Length at the top : 1,60M  This apparatus is caracterised by pendulum swings and circular swings

 Height : 2,80M from floor / 2,60M from top of mat  Ring routines: Strength Support Balance

 Height : 1,35M from floor  25M for the runway  The gymnast must perform one vault and two vaults if he’s selected for the final  The vault can contain single or multiple turns

 Height : 2,00M from floor / 1,80M from top of mat  Parallel bars exercises mainly consist in swings and flight elements

 Height : 2,80M from floor / 2,80M from top of mat  Horizontal bar routines : Swinging Turning Flight elements

 Before the 19th century: Usual cloths  : Sport dress  1928 : The sokol appeared (trousers)  1936 – 2007 : Track suit Leotard Gymnastics trousers in a single color Shorts Socks or slippers if trousers
