 I will expand my knowledge of vocabulary words.

 “alternate”  [awl-ter-neyt]

 Definition—  Verb: to follow by turns; to take  Noun: a substitute  Adj: substitute

 The students took turns getting out their English folders, alternating the job between student #1, 2, 3, and 4.  The coach sent in the alternate when his star forward twisted his ankle.

Is the word used correctly in the sentence? Ms. Rosado showed the class an alternate method for reducing fractions, giving them additional options to complete their homework. When the election produced a clear winner, an alternate voting method was called in to break a tie.

 Definition: difference; unlikeness; variety

 The change in season brought a diversity of colors to the leaves on the trees.  Looking around the room, Sarah could tell that the diversity of her classmates was great.

Is the word used correctly in the sentence? Dawes celebrates the diversity of its students, honoring the differences that make us Dawesome. The diversity of the family was most obvious in the identical twin girls.

 Definition: present everywhere; unlimited; that can be used for many different kinds, sizes, and so on.

 The tag on the t-shirt said, “one size fits all,” showing its universal sizing.  Music is a universal language, able to be understood by anyone of any language or culture.

Is the word used correctly in the sentence? A red octagon with white letters is a universal sign that cars should slow down and stop before continuing to drive. Written in only one language, the universal document was sent to people in every country.

 Definition: to push or drive forward

 As the driver pressed the gas pedal, the car propelled forward and entered the intersection.  The mother propels her child in the stroller so she doesn’t have to carry him on the long walk to the park.

Is the word used correctly in the sentence? When the propellers are off, the submarine propels forward. The bird propels itself forward by flapping its wings and flying on an air current flowing beneath its feathers.

 “Tributary”  [trib-yuh-ter-ee]

 Definition: a small stream flowing into a larger one; owed or paid as a tribute; contributory

 After the heavy flooding created new water paths, the small creek became a tributary to a nearby larger river.  In St. Louis, Missouri, the Missouri River becomes a tributary as it flows into the larger Mississippi River.
