 Born June 1903 in Motihari India  Birth name: Eric Arthur Blair  Moved to Great Britain with his Mom (Ida Mabel and his older sister (Marjorie) when he was One

 Described his family as “lower-upper-middle – class”  His father stayed and worked for the British government in India  Eric went to a private school and later won a scholarship to Wellington and Eton

 Knew at age 5 or 6 that he “MUST BE” a writer  Taught himself about great British authors  Instead of University he traveled and worked as a policeman in Burma  At 24 he taught himself how to write Weird ways: He wrote in an unheated, unlit dingy apartment He lived as a pauper in London and then Paris

 Why George Orwell?  Eric Blair shed his old image as a English policeman and became George Orwell – who was anti authority and convention  Saw his job as exposing Truth and calling for Action

 Lived in Spain during the Spanish Civil War – fought in the war He was impressed by the idea of equal living – no class distinctions – wealth and poverty lived together Had to flee with his wife to France to avoid violence Showed the idea of socialism was possible
