China’s Communist Revolution Chinese Communists defeated the Nationalists by winning the support of the peasants. The Communists discouraged religious practice and the ideas of Confucianism. Private properties were seized. Opponents were persecuted. Mao Zedong created communes to produce crops, steel, and other products. The products turned out to be of low quality. In the Cultural Revolution, many young Chinese answered the call to attack the bourgeois. 1 of 7 The Cold War Section 3: Communism Spreads in East Asia, pp Witness History Audio: Communist Victory in China 1.What emotions do you hear in Mao’s words? What emotions do you hear in Mao’s words? 2.Based on his words and the photo, what was the nature of China’s revolution?Based on his words and the photo, what was the nature of China’s revolution? China, the Cold War’s “Wild Card” China and the Soviet Union had a troubled history and a dispute over ideology and never formed a strong alliance. The U.S. came to recognize the People’s Republic of China and, under President Nixon, establish formal diplomatic relations. Taiwan continued to assert its independence from China. 2 of 7 Section 3: Communism Spreads in East Asia War Comes to Korea When each of the rulers of North and South Korea wanted to rule the entire country, the two sides went to war. The South was backed by the U.S. and the North by the Soviets. When Mao Zedong sent troops to help the North Koreans, the war turned into a stalemate and both sides agreed to an armistice. Indochina After World War II After the war, the French faced guerilla forces in their colony of Vietnam. The Vietnamese victory at the battle of Dienbienphu forced the French to leave. Vietnam was then divided into Communist and noncommunist sections. Guerilla fighters began operating in South Vietnam in the early 1960s. 1 of 5 The Cold War Section 4: War in Southeast Asia, pp Witness History Audio: America’s Role in Vietnam What is the main idea of President Kennedy’s comment? America Enters the Vietnam War The U.S. first sent supplies and military advisors to the South Vietnamese government. Then it sent hundreds of thousands of troops. The Soviets and Chinese sent aid but no troops to North Vietnam. Guerilla fighters were closely allied with villagers and knew the jungles well. The Tet Offensive changed public opinion over the war in the U.S. 2 of 5 Section 4: War in Southeast Asia Witness History Audio: The Vietnam War The Vietnam War Ends The mounting deaths brought growing opposition to the war in the U.S. The U.S. negotiated a cease-fire and withdrew its troops with the understanding that South Vietnam would be able to determine its own future. Two years later, North Vietnam conquered the South.
