Presentation transcript:

Choice not chance determines your destiny Dare to…. DREAM Choice not chance determines your destiny

Aim Intention Direction Target Goals Purpose Ambition Destination Objective

Set Big Goals and Go for it!

Dreams Nga moemoea Dreams allow you to see your future If you can see it, you can do it Dreams have to be important to you Dreams are your vision – your “wish list” Maintain a balance in your dreams (e.g. education, sport, family friends and work “Most people who fail in their dream fail not from lack of ability, but lack of commitment” Anonymous

Dreams without a plan are just that - dreams Dreams Nga moemoea Dreams without a plan are just that - dreams How do we turn them into reality?

Turning Dreams into Goals Goals are dreams that you work hard to reach Why set goals? To give us motivation To help us make plans for the future To provide direction To provide a sense of achievement and success “Goals that are not written down are just wishes” - Anonymous

Goals need to be…… Specific Measurable Attainable/Agreed Realistic Timed

Goals And don’t forget to think about….. Your support team (friends, family ,team-mates) How you evaluate and make adjustments to your goal Sacrifices you will need to make (like missing parties or weekends away) Roadblocks/Barriers The impact major goals can have on other areas of your life 9 trying to fit in schoolwork, friends, part-time jobs etc Importance of internal motivation

Common Goal Setting Problems Not specific Not focused – lack priority Not realistic No plan/strategy No ongoing evaluation Lack of commitment

ROADBLOCKS “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals” - Anonymous

Overcoming Roadblocks Stop … and chill out and relax for a bit Think ... Of all your choices the first one isn’t necessarily the best one Anticipate … will your choice help or hurt you achieve your goal? Respond ... Select the best solution – the one that helps you achieve your goal!

Roadblocks Potential Solutions Money/funding Sponsorship/part-time job/fundraising

Long Term Goals - career/work The way you want to be in 5 – 15 years in your - career/work - school accomplishments - personal life (the kind of person you would like to be) The type of job you want The level of sport you which to play at eg All Blacks To join a band To be the best surfer in Auckland, etc

Short Term Goals Those which you will reach in 3 - 6 months REALISTIC (out of reach, just, but not out of sight) Get B in Maths Get an A in English Make School Basketball team Spend more time listening to and supporting friends

The relationship between Long term and Short term goals Short term goals are the small steps you take before reaching your final destination. (Your Long term goal.) They are the stops on the way

Daily Goals Make daily goals Specific how much time you’ll spend studying, the amount of an assignment you’ll get done, the grade you want to achieve on your current assignment Eg’s Do 30 mins practising maths problems a week Get an A for my English Assignment Get started on the first part of my science project 20 mins Basketball shooting a week

The Importance of Goals The Value of striving for something, even if you are not successful The feeling of worth Self Esteem when you succeed If you dream something, you are more passionate about it

An Effective Goal should be Clear and Understandable Be clear about what you want. Avoid statements or promises. Possible Goals should be sufficiently challenging yet sill wihtin reach; something you can do and really want to do. Easy goals may be less rewarding Impossible goals lead to disappointment and self doubt Controllable You are the only person whose behaviour you can change. Goals involving others need their permission or active participation

Effective Goals continued Measurable Set dimensions for your goal How long will you allow? When will you complete what you set out to do? Do you need to specify an amount of time or some prior conditions to be met? Straightforward You want what you want! Avoid using either/or. If you include alternatives you may end up achieving nothing S M A R T Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timed

Categories of Goals Educational Career Personal Relationship Travel Family Financial Sporting Health

Time Management Learn to put priorities on your tasks and your time. Rank the things you want to do, from the most important to least important. Focus on the things that need attention NOW. Don’t dwell on past failures or future problems Do one thing at a time Divide large tasks into smaller parts and tackle these one at a time Be sure to include time for recreation and relaxation every day Work at a comfortable pace. “More haste , less speed” is a good maxim. Be flexible with your time schedule. Try to keep some time free each day to cope with the unexpected Use a diary, or a large calendar with plenty of space for noting down specific tasks, of have some other way of writing down your schedule and commitments Review your important goals for each day and each week. Revise them if you need to Don’t feel you have to get everything done TODAY. Spread your commitments over a period of time
