SABOT ANCHORING

REASONS TO ANCHOR Emergency Rest Weather a storm Hold position

ANCHOR TYPES

The Anchor Rode is everything between the boat and the anchor Shackle & wire lock Chain Thimble Splice

SCOPE Scope is the ratio of depth to the amount of anchor rode, that is with a scope of 7:1 if the depth is 20 feet the anchor rode should be 140 feet. See below:

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Students should be able to select an anchorage area, prepare to anchor and Safely deploy the anchor on an operational facility. The students should be able to check that it is holding position, and safely weigh the anchor.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: A. The boat crew should be able to select a safe anchorage area. B. A briefing should take place identifying hazards and tasks that must be done in preparation for & in anchoring. Crew tasks and responsibilities are assigned. Note wind direction & current. Review anchoring commands.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: C. Prepare ground tackle: Anchor line should be faked out, ready for use with the end of the line secured. D. Verify that ground tackle is securely connected and safety wired. Line should be faked unless stored in a locker ready for use. You don’t want it to foul.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: E. If possible, two crew members should be positioned on the bow for anchoring. F. Verify that the standing end of the anchor line is secured to a bitt or cleat. G. Coxswain should bring the vessel up into the wind/current and station keep.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Coxswain directs the crew to: ”STANDBY THE ANCHOR”, “LET GO THE ANCHOR” Anchor is lowered hand over hand from the bow.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: I. Crew should notify the coxswain when anchor is on the bottom and pay out enough line to properly hold the vessel. Coxswain determines the proper scope (5:1 to 7:1 or 10:1 for severe conditions).

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: J. Crew should secure the anchor line and so notify the coxswain. K. Coxswain should set the anchor by backing. L. Crew should return to the cockpit area.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: M. Coxswain should set an anchor watch to: Safe position of vessel Anchor is holding Swing area remains clear

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: N. Coxswain conducts a crew briefing for weighing anchor. Review hazards, assign duties and responsibilities, and standard commands to be used. O. Assigned crew take up position on bow.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: P. Coxswain gives command to crew: “MAKE READY TO HEAVE THE ANCHOR”. Q. Coxswain starts to move the boat forward and gives the command “HEAVE AROUND ON THE ANCHOR”, (start taking in the anchor).

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: R. When the anchor line is vertical, crew informs the coxswain “LINE IS UP AND DOWN”, (“VERTICAL”). S. Coxswain gives the command “BREAK FREE THE ANCHOR”.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: T. Crew informs the coxswain that the anchor is commencing to dig itself free; “ANCHOR IS AT SHORT STAY”. Crew informs the coxswain “ANCHOR’S AWAY” when the anchor is free of the bottom.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE V. Crew should keep the coxswain informed on the relative direction of the anchor line, “LINE TENDS ___ O’CLOCK UNDER (LIGHT, MODERATE, OR HEAVY STRAIN)”.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE W. Crew should inform the coxswain when the anchor is in sight, “ANCHOR IS IN SIGHT”. X. Crew should inform the coxswain when the anchor is at the surface, “ANCHOR IS AT WATER’S EDGE”.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE Y. As soon as the crew can determine, they should inform the coxswain that “ANCHOR IS (CLEAR, FOULED, OR SHOD)”. CLEAR means there is no foreign object on the anchor, FOULED means there is a foreign object on it, and SHOD means the anchor has mud, weeds, etc. on it.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE Z. Crew should inform the coxswain when the Anchor is positioned in its pocket (secured), “ANCHOR IS HAWSED”. AA. Coxswain gives the command MAKE THE ANCHOR READY FOR SEA” (secured for sea).

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE BB. Crew informs the coxswain when ANCHOR IS SECURED FOR SEA”. CC. Crew returns to the cockpit area. DD. Crew debriefs the evolution. NOTE: Be sure to dry the anchor line so as not to cause mold or mildew to form in the storage area.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE IF THE ANCHOR FAILS TO BREAK FREE: Direct crewmember to make the anchor line fast around the forward bitt/cleat. Maneuver boat ahead a few feet after anchor line made fast. If anchor not freed, placed engine(s) ahead slow and maneuvered in a wide circle until anchor freed.
