Dr. John Hayes Jr. Discusses the Diagnosis of Peripheral Neuropathy

Types of Peripheral Neuropathy There are many types of Peripheral Neuropathy that are classified based on their root causes. Some of them were brought about by: genetic predispositions (hereditary) post-chemotherapy heavy metal toxicities alcoholism diabetes

Common Types of Peripheral Neuropathy A common type of Peripheral Neuropathy is called Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy. This is when Peripheral Neuropathy seems to have occurred for no particular reason or of unknown cause…

Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy Patients who are diagnosed with any type of peripheral neuropathy often have very similar symptoms. These symptoms include:  numbness  loss of sensation  tingling  and sleep disturbance.

Determining PN’s components Thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the component of any type of Peripheral Neuropathy.

Clinical examination would include: …examining your vital signs, body mass index, the mobility and range of motion of your lower back and hips, and the overall health of your feet, skin, nails and hair, blood vessels and circulation.

Neurological examination …such as reflexes, muscle- testing, and sensation to touch using a device as simple as a pin, a brush or perhaps even a pinwheel, will also be conducted.

Laboratory tests are also conducted …such as chemistry panel, kidney and liver function tests, blood-sugar levels and a hemoglobin A1c… and often additional tests are necessary to best help you…

To best help you… Bring past laboratory tests, medical records and medication history when meeting with us for the first time.

The Good News Very significant progress is now being made in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy. This allows patients to not only get excellent in-office care, but to be discharged in a very reasonable period of time to a home treatment program with follow-up.
