Cartesian Coordinate System Infinity HS Ms. Sophia Papaefthimiou

Objectives 1. To learn (or remember) what a coordinate system is 2. To locate points in the coordinate system 3. To plot points in the coordinate system

Coordinate System (also called the coordinate plane) Formed by the intersection of two number lines, the horizontal axis and the vertical axis. Parts of a coordinate plane 1. x-axis 2. y-axis 3. Origin 4. Quadrants I-IV The horizontal axis is called the x-axis. The vertical axis is called the y-axis. The origin at (0, 0) is the point where the axes intersect. QUAD IQUAD II QUAD IIIQUAD IV

Locating Points RULE: Any point P is represented by an ordered pair of numbers written in the form (x, y) The x-value, called the x-coordinate, represents the horizontal placement of the point  The x-coordinate is also called abscissa The y-value, called the y-coordinate, represents the vertical placement of the point  The y-coordinate is also called ordinate The x-value is always first and the y-value is always second

Plotting Points 1. When plotting points you always start at the origin. 2. Next you go left (if x-coordinate is negative) or right (if x-coordinate is positive. 3. Then you go up (if y-coordinate is positive) or down (if y-coordinate is negative) Plot these 4 points: A (3, -4) B (5, 6) C (-4, 5) D (-7, -5) E (-8, 0) F (0, 4) G (0, -2) A B C D

xy Directions: Graph the of the following set of data represented below. Label each point.

Brain Pop Video

Exit Slip – Complete on graph paper 1. The horizontal line is known as the _____. 2. The vertical line is known as the ______. 3. The point at which the axes meet or intersect is known as the _____. 4. The ___ value is always first and the ___ value is always second. 5. Plot (3, 2) 6. Plot (2, 0) 7. Plot (0, -4)

Project Announcements 1. You can interview your client 2. You only need to answer the 10 questions for the cell phone plan you choose for your client (in a PP) 3. Presentations will be Thursday, Dec me a rough draft of your Power Point by Tuesday, December 8 by midnight (50 pts) 1. Copy your group members in the 2. I can give you feedback if you ask in your 5. me your final Power Point by Wednesday, December 16 by midnight Other Announcements Quiz Monday on graphing Test will be Friday, December 18 Homework Work on the project’s PowerPoint Review your Coordinate System notes and hw#1 – Study for Monday’s quiz HW#2: Table of values is due Tuesday, Dec 8

Cell Zone charges $0.20 per minute, with only a $15.00 monthly fee. 1. What is the monthly fee? 2. How many minutes are included in the monthly fee? 3. What is the cost per minute? 4. Write a function for this plan in function notation. 5. Find the monthly cost for each of the minutes listed below: Total Minutes (Minutes) Monthly Fee (US dollars)

The graph shows the monthly fee for Cell Zone. Use it to answer the following questions: 1) What is the monthly fee? 2) How many minutes are included in the monthly fee? 3) If a customer goes over the minutes included in the fee, how much will they be charged per minute ($/min)? 4) Write a function for this plan.

Rest of Period With your group, analyze the 4 cell phone plans Before you leave, turn in: 1. The name of your client 2. Which cell phone you are thinking of choosing for them 3. ≥ 2 reasons why you chose that plan for them
