Today’s Sermon: Psalm 46 & 47, “God the Refuge of His People / God the King of the Earth” by pastor Jim Bomkamp

Prev. Background of Psalm This Psalm was written about the glory of the King, and His glorious bride, whom He was preparing to wed. We saw that the language of the Psalm cannot relate to any earthly king. 2. We talked about the fact that Jesus as King, is the King of Righteousness, the King of Holiness, the King of Glory, and the King of Love.

Background of Psalm In this Psalm, the Psalmist writes about trusting our lives completely to the Lord, and ceasing to strive and scheme, fret and worry. 2. Martin Luther was thinking of this Psalm when he wrote his hymn, “A mighty fortress is our God.”. 3. Even though this Psalm is not ascribed to King David as the author, it seems to reflect his thinking and phrasing, as well as the wisdom God gave him. 4. The event that inspired the writing of the Psalm may have been when the angel of the Lord went out and slew 185,000 Assyrians one night

Psalm 46, “1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; 3 Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.Selah. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. 6 The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted. 7 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.Selah. 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has wrought desolations in the earth. 9 He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire. 10 “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.Selah.”

Background for Psalm This Psalm speaks figuratively of the Lord during that time of Christ’s victory, after He has risen from the dead and ascended up to heaven, as well as that time when He shall come in His power to reign as king upon the earth. 2. This Psalm speaks of the importance and primacy of praising the Lord and worshipping Him. We will discuss the fact that all of His subjects are worshippers. 3. Again, we believe that this must be a Psalm of King David. 4. The Bible Knowledge Commentary describes its theme this way: 5. According to the Wycliff Bible Commentary:

Psalm 47: “1 O clap your hands, all peoples; Shout to God with the voice of joy. 2 For the Lord Most High is to be feared, A great King over all the earth. 3 He subdues peoples under us And nations under our feet. 4 He chooses our inheritance for us, The glory of Jacob whom He loves.Selah. 5 God has ascended with a shout, The Lord, with the sound of a trumpet. 6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; Sing praises to our King, sing praises. 7 For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with a skillful psalm. 8 God reigns over the nations, God sits on His holy throne. 9 The princes of the people have assembled themselves as the people of the God of Abraham, For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is highly exalted.”

CONCLUSIONS: 1. Have you made it your commitment that you ‘will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea’, that no matter what happens that you will trust the Lord and do His will in your life? 2. Is the Lord that river of life in your life? 3. Have you ceased striving and are quiet in heart before the Lord, knowing that He is God?
