Physical Education Structures & Strategies: Basketball

The Fast Break The fast break is an offensive strategy in basketball In a fast break, a team attempts to move the ball up the court quickly to a scoring position.

When can fast break start? From a defensive rebound From an interception After your team has scored, if you can pass the ball in quickly

Who is involved? One point guard (playmaker) – a quick player who is good at dribbling and passing Two forwards – should be good at rebounding and scoring layups

What happens? One of the forwards rebounds the ball The forward passes to the point guard The point guard dribbles up the middle of the court The two forwards fill the lanes, running up the court The point guard passes to one of the forwards The forward scores a layup

The fast break: Forward Point guard Forward

Why use a fast break? It should result in a quick shot It should result in an easy high percentage layup The opposition will not be back and organised into defence

What happens if the fast break doesn’t work? Players can set up the 1 – 2 attack! Forward Point guard Forward
