Prepare to go “Beyond the Box” “ Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.” Walt Disney

Betsy McKinstry Director Antelope Valley Union High School District ACSA CTE Council, Chair

Introductions O Take a few minutes and ask the person next to you, their name, what they do and why are they here O Be prepared to share information about that person with the group Susan Cain: Introverts

Why? O The purpose of the Common Core State Standards is to define what students are expected to know and be able to do. The Common Core is designed to promote deep learning through rigorous student standards aligned with college and career expectations.

Challenges for College Graduates O Today’s crop of new B.A.s are staring at roughly 8.5 percent unemployment, 16.8 percent underemployment. Close to half of those who land work won’t immediately find a job that requires their degree, and for those stuck in that situation, there are fewer “good” jobs to go around. Welcome to adulthood, class of 2014.

“Essentially, postsecondary education or training has become the threshold requirement for access to middle-class status and earnings in good times and in bad. It is no longer the preferred pathway to middle-class jobs—it is, increasingly, the only way.” Alliance for Excellent Education

21 st Century Within the context of core knowledge instruction, students must also learn the essential skills for success in today’s world, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration. Partnership for 21 st Century Skills

The Question? O Are we focusing teaching and learning around the right college and career ready outcomes for all students ? O What are the challenges? O Take a few minutes to discuss

Breaking Out of the Box O Know your box and work within it O Embrace the box (every piece ) O Push outside the Box O Build your own box (live by the rules of the box) O Repeat steps Michael Bahr, Thinking Outside the Box, TedX

Identify Your Box O Draw a square on the file cards on your table ( or you can use technology) O Write in your box the areas that you feel make a school run: i.e. schedule, students, teachers, etc.
