What is the history of Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving was a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to God, family and friends for which all have been blessed of material possessions and relationships. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. This holiday has since moved away from its religious roots.

When Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God.[1]United StatesreligiousthanksGod[1] The event that Americans commonly call the first Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive their first brutal winter in New England.[2] The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.[3] The feast consisted of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, squash, beetroot and turkey.[4]PilgrimsPlymouth ColonyNew England[2][3]fowlvenisonfish lobsterclamsberriesfruit squash[4]
