ESF Strategic workshop "Social Identity, Equality and Health“ Lisbon, March 2010 Context: Belonging to a social group, being connected to a community and sharing a feeling of social integration is associated to well-being and also to health. But the large body of research around the concept of Social Identity only recently has been applied to health issues. Aims of the Strategic Workshop: To aggregate the persons that have been developing research on the associations of health and well being group identity

ESF Strategic workshop "Social Identity, Equality and Health“ Lisbon, March 2010 Preparation: Organizers: Luisa Lima and Dominic Abrams (UK). Invitations to 45 researchers, - 20 could not participate due to previous commitments - 38 participants attended 20 women (53%) 13 juniors (34%) 4 outside Europe (1 Australia, 1 USA, 1 Israel)

ESF Strategic workshop "Social Identity, Equality and Health“ Lisbon, March 2010 Preparation: Organizers: Luisa Lima and Dominic Abrams (UK). Invitations to 45 researchers, - 20 could not participate due to previous commitments - 38 participants attended 20 women (53%) 13 juniors (34%) Structure: 10 minutes presentations on the type of research that the team was doing and their ideas for future development in the field Discussion Break-up groups on ideas for future developments

ESF Strategic workshop "Social Identity, Equality and Health“ Lisbon, March 2010 Topics: Multiple identities and well-being Coping with discrimination Diversity, Equality and Health Health and Identity: the cases of age and gender Group processes and identity

ESF Strategic workshop "Social Identity, Equality and Health“ Lisbon, March 2010 Conclusions: Group identity issues clearly relevant to health and well-being Examples: acculturation of ethnic sub-groups health in age and gender related groups Identity as a complex construct but a consensual approach The results are diverse, but the same instruments and procedures have been used with different minorities all over Europe – opportunity for joint research

ESF Strategic workshop "Social Identity, Equality and Health“ Lisbon, March 2010 What this group has: Strong methodological approach to this problem (surveys, experiments) Theoretical platform that is rich and validated Very good research results when applied to real settings Lots of comparable data disseminated in different countries Potential for application of the “the social cure” as a less expensive and more effective solution in many health settings

ESF Strategic workshop "Social Identity, Equality and Health“ Lisbon, March 2010 What could have: Sharing research data in order to compare results and validate more general models – More contact among researchers? A joint data base? Application of the results to real problems – More multi-disciplinary research?; More training in real settings? Increase communication with decision-makers – Learning ways to communicate findings?
