Enabling the delivery of localized extended services the OpenURL framework Agenda The delivery of localized extended services the SFX software SFX/OpenURL and DOI/CrossRef

A&I e-print FTXT OPAC ILL Citations Web eTOC Disconnecting linking services from information resources Link Server

OpenURL The OpenURL: the enabling mechanism Full Text e-print Local service component make metadata available to service component dynamic insertion linking server describes context OPAC A&I

OpenURL The SFX Server (Resolver) from Ex Libris Full Text e-print server one of many possible service components OPAC A&I

Identify a user that has access to a local service component such as SFX (User profiles, digital certificates, cookie-pusher…)1 To enable Open Linking: Provide an OpenURL for each metadata-object eg citation2 Information Service Providers must: Where appropriate a link-to syntax should also be provided to allow “deep” linking into a resource.

BASE-URL server address for the service component (SFX) Content - elements of the metadata or pointer to metadata - information supporting delivery of services OpenURL format Example: &volume=12&issue=3&spage=1&epage=8&date=1998&aulast= Smith&aufirst=Paul

OpenURL => NISO Proposal submitted to NISO Proposal was approved as a NISO fast track work item A Standards Committee is being set up to work on the draft List of OpenURL adopters: OpenURL status

The SFX Flow – A&I record as link source

The SFX Flow – WoS record as link source

The SFX Flow – Zetoc record as link source

The SFX Flow – OPAC record as link source

The SFX Flow – E-journal reference as link source

Tools for online and batch configuration. Preconfigured templates: Regularly updated and distributed by Ex Libris – an optional service Subscribing library “localizes” to match library’s subscriptions and conditions (Interfaces to 3 rd party subscription data) Managing an SFX server

How many times did users click the SFX button within a specific resource? How many times was the article’s full text available via the SFX menu? If the article’s full text is available, how many times did users select other options from the SFX menu? SFX Statistical Reports For example:

SFX provides extended services (different kinds of links) SFX enables the localization of services and uses the appropriate links SFX sets up standardization of services across resources, as is defined by the librarian SFX furnishes a single point of administration of the various services for all data sources SFX uses the OpenURL standard SFX: open linking for libraries

DOI - CrossRef - SFX - OpenURL SFX/OpenURL and the CrossRef/DOI frameworks are compatible and complementary
