MONITORING MEETING EFDA Technology Workprogramme 2005 Activities Field: Safety and Environment Task Area: Waste Management TW5-TSW-001 Mol, June 27 th, 2006: L. Ooms, S. Leblanc

MONITORING MEETING Deliverable 2: Define the activity limits for the dismantling, melting, fabrication or reuse and waste. Deliverable 7: Define the categories of materials based on the different paths in the material cycle of a fusion reactor. Deliverable 8a: Define the R&D needs.

Case study of defined limits for HOR Melting facilities → 1000 Bq/g ► 4 µSv/h ► 6.4 mSv/y Other Doc’s → 10 µSv/h ► 16 mSv/y (1600 h, full exposure) Full exposure = 8 hours a day, 200 working days a year Simulation 10% exposure ► 125 µSv/h as limit value! Del. 2: Activity limits

Remote Handling Facilities Del. 2: Activity limits Activation analyses (PPCS Model AB) → maximum dose rates up to 1.2 E4 Sv/h (10 days decay) Hot cell facilities at SCKCEN: Laboratory for Low and High Activities Hot cell BR2 Building for Vitrified waste at Belgoprocess → dose rates up to 1.4 E4 Sv/h.

The limits defined in the past can be increased for HOR. Since facilities exist for remote handling of high active materials the limit for RHR is higher than the dose rate of the fusion materials. Conclusions: Del. 2: Activity limits Draft report ► beginning of July
