The Acropolis By Ginny Haynes

History The Athens Acropolis is an ancient monument built high on a rock outcrop over looking the city of Athens. Pericles who originally fought Athena for the position to be Athens protector was the main coordinator of the construction of the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Ancient Greeks started the construction of the Acropolis in 495 B.C. and finally finished the construction of it in 429 B.C. North-West of the Acropolis is Areopagus. It functioned as the high Court of Appeal for criminal and civil acts in the classical age.

Map of the Acropolis

Unfortunately I couldn’t get pictures of the Acropolis at night. So here some pictures I found on the internet. Acropolis at night

My Experience at the Acropolis I went on a Spring Break trip with the Art History class I was in and a Business class that a few of my friends were in. We flew into Rome the first day and stayed there for four days. On the fourth day we went to Florence to look around at the churches there and some of the people from our art history class broke off from the group and went to go see the original statue of the David. Days five and six we go to Sorrento and Pompeii. Days seven and eight we head to Delphi then Athens On the ninth day is when we get to tour the Acropolis. I was astounded when I went up on the Acropolis to see how well kept the monuments were. They weren’t in total ruin and still had their original shape for the most part. I loved looking out over the edge of the Acropolis and being able to see the whole city of Athens below.
