John Bunyan’s life and works ; Literary term: allegory; Introduction of The Pilgrim’s Progress. 内容简介 (P )

重点和难点 Definition of allegory Theme of The Pilgrim’s Progress.

John Bunyan ( ) Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners 上帝赐予最大罪 人的无限恩惠 The Holy War 圣战 Pilgrim's Progress 天路历程 The Life and Death of Mr. Badman 坏人先生传

Allegory 寓言 讽喻 A narrative in prose or verse that conveys a symbolic meaning that lies outside the narrative itself. The underlying meaning has moral, social, religious or political significance and characters are often personifications of abstract ideas. Related forms are fable and the parable, which are didactic, comparatively short and simple allegories.

The Pilgrim’s Progress 《天路历程》 Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress allegorizes the Christian doctrine of salvation by telling how the character named Christian, warned by Evangelist, flees the City of Destruction and makes his way laboriously to the Celestial city; en route he encounters characters with names like Faithful, Hopeful, and the Giant Despair, and passes places like the Slough of Despond, the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and Vanity Fair.

Theme Major theme: spiritual salvation for mankind The cost of salvation is great. The road to salvation is difficult and lonely. Man must earn every bit of salvation.

Charms of the book Straightforward allegory: little difficulty in the interpretation of the often rather intricate allegory Simple language and colloquial expressions: still familiar to the modern ear Vividness of description: absolute sincerity combined with imagination True-to-life characters Perfect story telling: minuteness of detail, unconcerned colloquialism, and absence of straining for effect
