DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau YSB assists youth as they build healthy lives & relationships with their family, friends, & community. YSB …for the future of youth!!!

Our Role in the Community Youth and Family Services  Specialize in adolescent population and their families.  Early identification of underlying issues that can lead to bigger issues.  Successful detection and treatment reduces costs associated with more expensive forms of intensive-based treatments and repeated juvenile delinquency. Community Presentations  Addressing issues facing youth and families. Projects & Initiatives  Committees, projects, collaborations. Engaging Youth in the Community  Talk-based therapy may not be most effective for every teenager.  YSB strives to get youth involved in community projects that will also benefit others.  YSB partners with other non-profit organizations and local businesses to create meaningful experiences. Trustworthy Resource  Current with mental health issues and trends that youth and families face today.

Service Trends

Demographics

Referral Reasons

Referral Sources

Recent Trends If we’re seeing, I’m sure you are too… Increased Demand for Core Services Higher severity of complex mental health issues  autistic, learning disorders, etc. and youth that have experienced trauma (extreme bullying, physical/sexual abuse, etc.). Higher frequency of families requiring multiple services  shelter, food, utilities, etc Higher frequency of complex crisis cases (runaway/lockout) Higher demand for bilingual services

What We Do Out-Patient Counseling YSB offers individual and family counseling to address the specific needs of those experiencing difficult situations in their lives. (Spanish speaking/bilingual counselor on staff)

Specialized Groups

Specialty Services Alterative to Suspension  Day-long services for youth that have been suspended from school Court Ordered Youth  Helping court-involved youth to get back on track Crisis Intervention  24 hour crisis intervention for runaway/lock out youth School Based Services (Collaboration)  HMS, SMS, KEC, DHS

Client Comments YSB actually makes you feel important and has really great service. I can't wait to continue improving myself with a great counselor! I love  girls group so so much I never want it to end. I like the group-- there is nothing that you should change this group is amazing. I would recommend this to friends/family. It was "specticifull."

Parent Comments I really saw that the class had a positive influence on my son. Thanks so much! We loved our counselor. She worked with us on scheduling flexibility and she is an absolutely amazing person. My daughter enjoyed the people here who did help her this week. It is a great place for young adults who have messed up with their lives. Very appreciative that there are other suspension options rather than staying home.

Testimonial “My daughter had tried to commit suicide and ended up in the ICU. Being a single parent, I had no idea how to handle this. A few days later, I had opportunity to work with YSB on a crisis call and noticed the therapist was saying things to the teen that actually got his attention, and saying them in a way he didn't resent. Long story short she was able to convince him of what was best for HIM that night. I was impressed at how she was able to reach through his rough exterior and take care of him and thought that's the kind of counselor I need for my daughter. I got my daughter to YSB as soon as possible and have been taking her for several weeks. After the first session my daughter was in a very good mood and was talking with me the whole way home. Every week it is like that, and between sessions she engages me in conversation quite often. She is my little girl once again and I am ecstatic about it. I accredit YSB for opening her up and helping her make sense of life.”

Thank You! It’s vital to get youth the help they need as early as possible. The better we do this, the greater the impact on the child’s education, their family life, and our community as a whole. YSB provides reduced-cost services to DeKalb County residents which means more people have access to the help they need.
