“One of the biggest strains on students in the amount of exams they have to sit. Exam preparation causes anxiety and stress and number of exams that students must prepare for has increased substantially. For instance, students must now prepare for SATS as well as their finals.” what is the best heading for this paragraph? 1. Students sit a lot of exams 2. Exams cause a lot of stress 3. Causes of anxiety Class 3

Skimming Skimming Skimming is reading a text to get the gist, the basic overall idea, rather than concentrating on absorbing all the details. For instance, many people skim read a newspaper article just to get a quick overview, or a text could be skimmed to see whether it's worth reading in detail.textgist Class 3

Skimming A good skimming strategy involves reading the first sentence of a paragraph. As the first sentence should be the topic sentence, you should clearly understand what that paragraph is about. Class 3

We often preview a question to look for clues that will help us find the answer. What kind of clues can we look for and how will they help us find the answer? Discuss strategies with your partner. Class 3

Scanning. Scanning is another technique we can use to quickly read a passage. When we scan we are looking for specific facts or pieces of information. This is why it is useful to preview the question. Then we know what keywords we are looking for and what form the answer will be in. Class 3

Reading for detail True false or not given question, you need to understand the text fully to be able to answer. Therefore you must read the text carefully. Class 3

Reading for detail Because a text can be very long, we should first scan for the key words to find the relevant section, then read that section for detail. Class 3

Turn to Pg. 53 and look at exercise 1. This task asks us to match the extracts to the topics, therefore we are looking for the main idea of the extract. Which reading skill should we use to find the main idea? Class 3

For Exercise 2 we need to find details. What skill would we use to find this information? Class 3

For Exercise 3 we need to show that we have understood the text, which skill do we need to use? Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ These two sounds are very similar. We don’t use the tongue to produce these sounds. Instead it is the amount of air released and lip position that make these sounds. Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Hold a piece of paper in front of your mouth and practice the two sounds. Which sound makes the paper move more? Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ So the /p/ sound releases a more powerful burst of air. Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Practice again and decide which sound is caused by a short release of air. Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Practice again and decide which sound is caused by a short release of air? Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Practice one more time. This time with your fingers on your throat. Which sound is voiced? Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Class 3 /b//p/ Weak release of airStrong release of air Longer release of airQuick release of air VoicedVoiceless

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Turn to Pg. 209 and complete conversation at the top of the page with either B or P. Then we will listen and check your answers. Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Look at the word: Kill Its sounds are [kil] If we reverse the sounds [lik] We have the word lick Class 3

Pronunciation: /b/ and /p/ Complete exercise 2 by reversing the sounds and writing the words Class 3
