Algebra I Unit 1: Solving Equations in One Variable Learning Goal: 1.1 Michelle A. O’Malley 8 th Grade Math League Academy of Communication Arts Greenville, South Carolina

Unit 1: Learning Goal 1.1 Students will understand the structure of the real number system and understand how the subsets are related.

Unit 1: Learning Goal 1.1 – Essential Knowledge and Skills for Students The students will use problem solving, reasoning, communication, connections and representation to: Construct a diagram to show how the subsets of the real number system are related. –Classify numbers as natural, whole, integers, rational or irrational. –Compare and order real numbers with an without a number line.

Unit 1: Learning Goal 1.1 Algebra I Standards: EA-2.5 and EA-1.1 EA-2.1 – Exemplify elements of the real number system, including integers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers. EA-1.1 – Communicate knowledge of algebraic relationships using mathematical terminology appropriately.

Rational Numbers on the Number Line

Rational Numbers Natural Numbers {1, 2, 3, …} Whole Numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, …} Integers{…, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, …} Rational Numbers Numbers expressed in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0
