Lesson Thirteen Christmas  Questions:  Do you know anything about Christmas ( time and reason )?  Please tell us what you know about it  ( Father Christmas, Christmas tree, presents)?  Do you know the origin of it? ( Jesus Christ )

Qustions  What is the writing style of the story?  How many parts can we divide the text into? And why?  What was the best present did the author give to his father at the Chrstmas when he was 14 ( the theme)?  Can you retell the text roughly?

Writing skills  Ⅰ. 1. Simile 2. metaphor  1. a direct comparison between two unlike elements  “as, as…..so, like”  E.g.  As cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.  as cunning as a fox, as poor as a church’s mouse  The world is like a stage.  2. An indirect comparison. It implies the likeness between things without the use of like or as.  Life is a highway. The world is a stage.

Writing skills  Exercise:  For secrets are edged tools, and must be kept from children and fools.  No man is an island, entire of itself.  If poetry comes not as naturally as leaves to a tree, it had better not come at all.  His friend has become a thorn in his side.  A dance is a measured pace, as a verse is a measured speech.  Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.

In-class discussion and presentation  1.What is the writing technique here?  2.What is the theme of this text?  3.“Love alone could awaken love.” how do you understand the sentence? And “Love is like measles. Everyone has to go through it.”; “Love is blind.”  3. Do you agree that only love can awaken love? What is the essence of true love? Give your reasons.
